Suction in shales: consequences on triaxial testing

نویسندگان

چکیده

Significant interest has been devoted to claystones and shales in the context of geological radioactive waste disposal at great depth. The determination their mechanical properties is needed for appropriate design underground galleries tunnels. Given high sensitivity changes water content, special care be taken so as provide characteristics close possible (saturated) insitu ones. Based on hydromechanical path followed by samples from coring trimming lab, that most often lead some degree desaturation resulting evaporation drying samples, procedures aimed minimising perturbations are described. considerations presented based data obtained two (swelling) considered Europe deep disposal, i.e., Callovo-Oxfordian claystone (France) Opalinus Clay (Switzerland).

behavior of rockfill materials in triaxial compression testing

this paper studies thoroughly and deeply the results of about one hundred triaxial compression tests on thirty types of rockfill materials. the materials are categorized in accordance with their particles shape (angular / rounded) and gradation characteristics. the main tool of the study is the hyperbolic model developed by duncan and chang. the focus of the study is on the variations of deform...

Validity evidence based on testing consequences.

BACKGROUND Large-scale educational assessments in the U.S. are used as policy tools for improving instruction and evaluating educational programs and the effectiveness of educators. Because of the high-stakes nature of their use, it is imperative that validity evidence based on testing consequences is obtained to support their multiple purposes. METHOD A comprehensive review of the literature...

Consequences of Testing Memory

Studies using a wide variety of conditions and a diverse set of procedures show that testing memory affects future behavior. The studies have used differing terminology and have been ascribed to differing specialty areas of the literature. Partly, for this reason, the various phenomena have been described in ways, suggesting they differ in substance. In this chapter, we relate many of these phe...

Testing the efficiency of suction samplers (G-vacs) on spiders: the effect of increasing nozzle size and suction time

The efficiency of two G-vacs (Ryobi RSV 3100 and Flymo BVL 320) was tested to examine the effects of increasing the suction nozzle area and the sampling time whilst keeping total sampling area constant (0.49 m). We tested an a priori hypothesis that increasing nozzle area was significant but that reducing sampling time was not, using a planned comparisons approach. We found that when the nozzle...

On the water retention behaviour of shales

Shales are among the most considered geomaterials in current energy-related geomechanical investigations; they are involved in engineering applications such as the unconventional extraction of natural gas, CO2 sequestration and nuclear waste geological storage. A deep understanding of their behaviour with regard to variations in the degree of saturation is of primary significance for such appli...
